Hi John xxxxxx,
Amber Thurman and Candi Miller were both mothers of young children, and this week, we were devastated and outraged to learn that they both died from lack of access to modern, standard reproductive healthcare due to their state’s abortion ban. Doctors let Amber suffer in pain for 20 hours before they finally intervened – by then, it was too late. Candi was too fearful to even enter a hospital.
We are working to unseat each and every legislator who passed abortion bans – in every single abortion ban state across the country. That is why we are reaching out today – to tell you about our endorsed candidate in TN, who has a story of her own.
We know you’re busy, but we hope you’ll turn your outrage into action. Women MUST fight back. There have been too many tragic stories of women missing out on STANDARD MODERN HEALTHCARE in the United States – made possible by a lack of representation in the rooms of power where these unconscionable decisions are being made. Join our fight and donate to Her Bold Move today. →
We’ll start with a powerful excerpt from a recent article about her in NPR:
“The path to Tennessee politics for Allie Phillips began last year in her doctor's office. She was 19 weeks pregnant when she got the devastating news about her unborn daughter: only two of the four chambers in her heart were formed.”
Following the diagnosis, Doctors warned that continuing the pregnancy would endanger Allie’s life. But, as you may know by now, the Tennessee state legislature, which is 85% male, passed a near-total ban on abortion in 2022. She left the state, devastated and heartbroken, to obtain the life-saving care she needed – but her story is far from over.
We are proud to support Allie’s candidacy for the TN House of Representatives against her extremist anti-abortion opponent. But with only 47 days until Election Day, we are running out of time to make sure she has the support she needs to win. After her traumatic experience, Allie met with her legislator, Rep. Jeff Burkhart, to share her story and persuade him to sponsor a measure she named after the baby she lost but desperately wanted, “Miley’s Law,” which would add an exception for fetal anomalies to the state abortion ban. However, it was clear that Buckhart was not only disinterested in Allie’s story but was completely uninformed. He responded to her story with two statements:
-
He thought miscarriages could only happen with first pregnancies (???)
-
If his own daughter had been in Phillips’s position, he’d have wanted her to continue the pregnancy. (!!!!)
After the meeting, Phillips wrote to Buckhart and said, “Every chance I get to tell my story, I will… Who knows, maybe one day I’ll run against you.”
He never responded. Allie later told The Washington Post that was when she decided she wasn’t going to rely on a man. She’d have to take matters into her own hands.
Allie’s district is one that Democrats have identified as flippable – yes, in TENNESSEE. This is our chance to replace her anti-choice, anti-woman extremist opponent, and we are honored to be standing with her in this fight. Support Allie’s campaign by donating a split $20.24 or more today →
