At some point, you’ve probably seen the humorous quiz that asks readers to determine whether an image depicts a gerrymandered congressional district or a Rorschach inkblot. While the shapes of some of these districts are certainly amusing, the way in which they disenfranchise voters is serious business. Gerrymandering diminishes voters’ power, creating fewer competitive districts. The result is usually that one party receives a disproportionate boost, thus undermining the will of the people. In November, Ohio voters will have an opportunity to end this insidious practice by voting on Ohio Issue 1, the Establish the Citizens Redistricting Commission Initiative, which would establish a 15-member non-politician commission responsible for adopting state legislative and congressional redistricting plans.
