International Rescue Committee
Hi there,
My name is Jenny. I work for the IRC and am writing to you while on maternity leave. My son Auden was born just seven weeks ago.
Like so many new moms right now, all I want to do is protect my son and enjoy the sweet moments with him. But during this pandemic the hardest thing to handle is that we can only do so much to keep our children safe.
Here in the U.S., I do feel comfort in knowing I can social distance and reach a pediatrician if I need. New moms in crowded refugee camps who have already endured so much don't have this luxury. I wonder: What do they do when they can't access a doctor or things that may seem small like diapers or blankets to keep their babies warm at night? How will they protect their children from COVID-19?
Thinking about them makes me also think about the impact of the IRC's Mother's Day Rescue Gifts. » When you purchase these gifts, you can help the IRC support new moms and families in refugee camps during the pandemic while also connecting with your own mom this Mother's Day even if you have to be apart from her.
SEND AN E-CARD RESCUE GIFT TO YOUR MOM IN HONOR OF REFUGEE MOMS, BABIES, AND FAMILIES WORLDWIDE »
Since having my baby, I feel connected with my mom on a whole new level. I want so much for her to share in the joy of her grandson. He's changing and growing so fast. I wish she could be here. And I don't know when she's going to be able to.
It's so difficult right now for all of us because there is just no end in sight to this pandemic.
I wonder: What will happen if my baby gets sick? What if I get sick and can't take care of my son? If we all get sick, I can't call my mom to come help. My mind goes to all these places.
Look, there is so much we can't control right now. But that doesn't mean we're powerless. It's essential that we reach out to the people we love, and come together to help vulnerable families in need.
Today, that means FaceTiming with my mom, and sending her an IRC Mother's Day Tribute Card in support of refugee moms. »
The IRC is there to provide help that may seem small, but can be the difference between life and death for a child. A good day and a bad day. A good month or a bad month.
All a mother wants to do is care for and protect her child. If each of us can just help one mother do that — that's an amazing contribution.
Please, will you consider sending a Rescue Gift this Mother's Day to honor your mom while supporting refugees around the world?
