Last week, the Attorney General of Michigan issued criminal charges against 9 protesters who demonstrated for a ceasefire in Gaza on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus last spring.
As Justice Democrats Rep. Rashida Tlaib pointed out, this is a clear attack on students’ freedom of speech, which they were using to stand on the right side of history and demand an end to the ongoing genocide against innocent Palestinians.
But it gets worse.
A new investigation from the Detroit Free Press found that Detroit police have spent years monitoring the social media accounts of protesters, even if they’re not suspected of any crime. When they denied surveilling ceasefire demonstrators last spring, they lied.
Rashida once again spoke out and stood with activists: “If you stand up for justice in Detroit, you will be targeted for repression by the Detroit Police. This is a City gov't that has wasted millions targeting activists. This has to end.”
We agree, and clearly, we need more progressive, anti-war leaders like Rashida who are willing to fight for the rights of their constituents against this targeted surveillance and censorship in Washington.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
