You may have already seen the headlines: yesterday, Senate Republicans, led by Ted Cruz, loudly proclaimed their support for protecting IVF — and then promptly blocked the Right to IVF Act in the Senate.
The bill he blocked would have simply said individuals have a right to “receive fertility treatment from a health care provider” and “make decisions and arrangements regarding the donation, testing, use, storage, or disposition of reproductive genetic material,” like sperm, eggs, and embryos. But he couldn’t even bring himself to vote for it.
Beyond Cruz’s sheer shamelessness, something caught our eye: our opponent, Mike Rogers, came out to celebrate Ted Cruz’s fight to “protect” IVF.
Rogers’ support for IVF runs just about as deep as Ted Cruz’s. All you need to do is look at the actual voting record: Between 2005 and 2013, Rogers co-sponsored 4 (!) bills that defined embryos as persons from the moment of conception, just as the Alabama legislation that shut down IVF. Before that, Rogers supported a nationwide ban on abortion that could have also made IVF nearly impossible. In fact, Rogers and Cruz have essentially the same voting record on the issue of choice and IVF.
So here’s the thing: either Rogers didn’t understand what he was doing when he signed on to all these bills, or he simply didn’t care what would happen to women, to families, and to our communities should his bills have become law.
Michigan doesn’t need another Ted Cruz in the U.S. Senate. (Heck, Texas doesn’t even need the Ted Cruz they’ve got in the Senate!) And we certainly don’t need someone who has voted against women and families for two decades, then tries to swindle you into believing he’ll change and support your rights if elected to the Senate. Michiganders just don’t buy it.
So we’re asking: will you chip in to make sure that Michigan’s next Senator isn’t a Ted Cruz 2.0?
