John --
Bristol Bay is the world’s most vibrant and valuable salmon fishery. Forty-two percent of the world’s wild salmon and 80 percent of sockeye, king, and coho salmon come from Alaska. More than 14,000 jobs depend on the fish in Bristol Bay alone.
But a foreign company and special interests want to build “an open-pit mine and support operations with a potential footprint as large as Manhattan, and a pit descending nearly three-quarters as deep as the Grand Canyon.”
Scientists at the EPA fear that not only would the project destroy habitats and wetlands at the mining site, but also that massive pits holding tons of mine waste and toxic chemicals would leak into two rivers that empty into the bay.
But these scientists were overruled by President Donald Trump’s political appointees after Governor Mike Dunleavy personally lobbied on behalf of the mining company on Air Force One.
It’s special interest politics at its worst.
If the Pebble Mine goes forward, it could lead to a complete loss of fish habitat in large parts of Bristol Bay -- which would be devastating to our environment and to Alaska’s fishing industry.
We can’t wait for the next election to stop this project. With so much at stake, we have to organize right now. Add your name and tell Senator Dan Sullivan to get to work on stopping the Pebble Mine.
Thank you,
Dr. Al Gross for U.S. Senate
