John, As someone who is interested in protecting democracy, you know that state legislatures can be key to enacting new redistricting reforms, strengthening existing redistricting reforms, and providing a key check on Republican attempts to gerrymander. As part of our 2024 electoral strategy, we’ve identified states where we need to flip or hold key chambers to help protect free and fair elections. So many of these state-level races come down to just hundreds of votes. It means the work we do to reach and educate voters about the stakes of these races really matters. Can you make a donation today to help safeguard democracy? Let’s quickly review the strategy: FOUR TO FLIP
New Hampshire: Republicans have to defend tiny majorities — the House is considered a toss-up and the Senate is within reach. The Republican trifecta could redraw its congressional map at any moment, so a flip here is critical to put GOP gerrymandering to rest. Georgia: Republicans have enacted extreme voter suppression laws that target communities of color with despicable precision. The twenty-seven state legislature candidates we’ve endorsed as Democracy Defenders give us a real chance to gain real ground, lay the groundwork for more victories to come, and push back against GOP attacks on our democracy. Wisconsin: Earlier this year, the Republican-drawn, gerrymandered legislative maps were struck down in court and now we have a real chance at flipping the State Assembly and making gains in the State Senate — our best shot in a generation. Arizona: Republicans hold just a two-seat majority in both the State House and Senate. If we can help get out the vote and win a majority in both chambers, we can build power that can be used to strengthen the state’s redistricting process. TWO TO HOLD
Michigan: Republicans are trying to take back the House this November. If they do, they could attempt to roll back progress on fair maps by targeting the state’s independent redistricting commission. Minnesota: Democrats won a trifecta of their state’s government in 2022, but this year, *only* the full State House is on the ballot. Republicans only need to flip five seats to flip it back. ONE SPECIAL COMMONWEALTH
Pennsylvania: Here, Republicans control the State Senate and Democrats control the House. If we flip the Senate and hold the House, another Democratic trifecta will give us a route to redistricting reform. *** Our state-by-state strategy relies on people like you who believe in safeguarding democracy. With under 50 days until the election, there’s never been a more impactful time to help create fair maps in these priority states. Will you chip in $30 right now to help power this critical work in races like these? Thank you,
