Experience the Colors of Fall as the Autumn Equinox Arrives

Northern Maine seeing moderate color changes in foliage. September 18, 2024 [ [link removed] ]

*(AUGUSTA, Maine) *—  The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) has released its second 2024 Maine Fall Foliage Report [ [link removed] ], showing very low color change (less than 30 percent) throughout the state.  As of September 18, 2024, DACF Maine Forest Service Rangers in northern Maine report moderate color change (less than 50 percent), with very low to low leaf drop throughout the entire state.

Typically, northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) reaches peak conditions between the last week of September and the first week of October. Color change moves from north to south, with peak conditions for the rest of the state expected by mid-October. Coastal Maine usually experiences peak foliage from mid-to-late October.

“With the autumn equinox on Sunday, September 22, we bid farewell to summer and welcome cooler, fall-like temperatures, which will accelerate the vibrant color transformation across Maine’s stunning landscape,” said Gale Ross, DACF Fall Foliage Spokesperson. “It’s the perfect time to start planning your outdoor adventures for the coming weeks, enjoying the crisp weather and vivid fall hues.”

Here are some exciting ways to embrace the start of the fall season in Maine:

* *Visit a Fall Fair*: Kick off the season with the Common Ground Country Fair [ [link removed] ], running from Friday through Sunday. Known for celebrating organic agriculture, sustainable living, and local economies, the fair features more than 1,000 exhibitors and speakers. Also, don’t miss the 152nd Annual Cumberland County Fair [ [link removed] ], opening Sunday and running through September 28, which promises agricultural events, a demolition derby, live entertainment, and a pumpkin and squash weigh-off.
* *Explore Bethel Harvestfest*: On Saturday, September 21, head to the Lakes and Mountains region for the 26th Annual Bethel Harvestfest [ [link removed] ]. Enjoy a farmers’ market, artisan and craft vendors, an apple pie contest, live music, and children’s activities—all set against beautiful fall foliage.
* *Celebrate Maine Lobster Week*: Beginning on Sunday, Maine Lobster Week [ [link removed] ] is a must for seafood lovers. This annual celebration supports the state’s lobster industry and features lobster-inspired dishes at participating restaurants across the state.
* *Take a Scenic Road Trip*: As foliage progresses southward, the next region to experience brilliant color is The Maine Highlands [ [link removed] ], home to iconic landmarks like Moosehead Lake and Katahdin. For a memorable leaf-peeping adventure, explore the Katahdin Woods & Waters Scenic Byway [ [link removed] ], where you’ll find breathtaking overlooks and a chance to spot wildlife amidst Maine’s pristine wilderness.
* *Join in the Fall Fun*: For more autumn activities, check out VisitMaine’s social media channels. They feature a fall-themed Bingo game and activities like sampling apple cider donuts and exploring one of the state’s 32 parks. It’s a great way for residents and visitors to embrace the season fully.
