AHC & ULI Create Vision for Serrano, AHC Volunteers at Allium Place, Vaccine Clinic at MonteVerde, & Get Involved! September 2024 E-Newsletter AHC Taps ULI to Guide Planning at Serrano AHC partnered with ULI Washington, the local district council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), to explore a comprehensive vision for the Serrano Apartments in Arlington, Virginia, using ULI’s Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) process. After community discussions, stakeholder roundtables, and panel meetings, the TAP produced a set of recommendations for reimagining the buildings and surrounding property and presented them to AHC and the community on September 5. “We’re proud to collaborate with ULI and the TAP as we explore opportunities to further improve resident experience at the Serrano,” Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, said. “The unbiased, expert advice and specific recommendations will help guide our long-term planning for the Serrano.” Read More   REAL ESTATE RECAP AHC Staff Volunteer at Allium Place AHC volunteered with partner Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland at Allium Place (formerly called Randolph Road), our upcoming Montgomery County community in Silver Spring, to help build one of the 27 homeownership condos and houses that will be available there. AHC staff and volunteers worked hard to raise the exterior panels of a house, including windows and doorways. The group used drills of all kinds, hammers, levels, and so much more. The community will also have 168 affordable rental apartments. Read more about Allium Place. ICYMI: CBS Evening News recently included this community in a feature story on housing in America. Meeting with Local Leaders at Summit Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, attended the 9th Annual Northern Virginia Regional Elected Leaders Summit with some members of the AHC team. It was a great time connecting with peers and hearing from local elected leaders. Kudos to the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, and Northern Virginia Regional Commission for hosting such a great event. In Case You Missed It Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, spoke with Connell McShane on NewsNation Now about the housing policies proposed by the U.S. presidential candidates. The Baltimore Sun published an opinion article by Paul on the need for candidates to address the housing crisis — no matter their political party. Washingtonian Magazine featured The Westerly, AHC’s newest community in Washington, D.C., for its unique financing and features.   NEWS NUGGETS Vaccine Clinic at MonteVerde Earlier this month, we held a vaccine clinic at MonteVerde, an AHC community in Baltimore for seniors and non-elderly residents with a disability. A local Giant pharmacy provided COVID-19, flu, and RSV vaccines to residents onsite. We’re proud to remove barriers to care and help our residents protect themselves from sickness this season!     Building Self-Esteem Through Women's Empowerment Program Last month, the Women’s Empowerment program participants from Greenspring Overlook, an AHC community in Baltimore, met with Dawn Johnson, a life coach and retired doula, to explore self-esteem. The group learned about what affects self-esteem and how to build it. One technique is using affirmations. The women received books of affirmations to help them on their personal journeys.   Spotlighting AHC Communities Check out our September #CommunitySpotlight! This time we’re featuring The Spire, an AHC community in Alexandria. We developed The Spire through a partnership with The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. You’ll hear from Claudia, AHC Resident Engagement Specialist, about what Resident Services means in the community. The community also started free English classes this month taught by volunteers from Goodwin Living and The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection – The Spire’s amazing neighbors! Watch the video.   GET INVOLVED Volunteer Opportunities AHC believes HOUSING + EDUCATION = SUCCESS. Our education programs started this week in six locations in Arlington, and we still need 100+ volunteers. We have one-time volunteer opportunities with food distributions and computer basics classes for seniors. We’re also looking for volunteers to make snack bags and welcome baskets for residents. Learn more or contact [email protected] for more information.   Thanks to the generosity of AHC donors, our Back-to-School Drive helped more than 1,000 of our youngest residents start the school year ready for success! Special thanks to The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and an AHC friend for helping us raise an additional $10,000 through their matching gift challenge. Volunteers and community partners helped distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to happy and proud elementary-age students.
