Trump & Vance’s lies against Ohio’s Haitian community are reprehensible. Here’s how to help.
During last week’s debate, Trump told a vile racist lie on national television. He falsely claimed that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating pets. The ABC News debate moderators rightly and swiftly debunked Trump’s lie.
Nonetheless, Trump’s lie stoked a new wave of racist hatred from Trump supporters nationwide, including a week of bomb and shooting threats that have shut down the community in Springfield. And Trump and Vance—the sitting senator from Ohio—have doubled down and continued telling the lie to whip up their supporters.
Many folks on social media have mocked the absurdity of this claim as another example of Trump’s special brand of awfulness. But we must keep the very real people Trump demonized at the center of our thoughts and actions.
All around the country, good people are coming together in solidarity with the Haitian community to protect and help the people being targeted by Trump and Vance.
Here’s what you can do to help.
- Donate to Haitian Community Help & Support Center Springfield. This organization offers services for refugees and immigrants living in Clark County, Ohio, and provides safe spaces for young people which are of critical importance at this time.
- Be careful about how you talk about this - including jokes. Trump is so successful at creating waves of racist violence because his statements are so outrageous that people share and repeat them. Even mocking his claims still amplifies them.
Obviously, we understand the desire to share the news that Trump told a racist lie, as well as to dunk on him. It's important to express outrage and tear down racist lies—but we must be careful not to give oxygen to racist tropes that inspire violent bigots. Making jokes and memes about eating pets is an example of doing it wrong—especially on the public Internet.
Remember: our number one goal as activists is to protect our communities and the communities we ally with. They must be top of mind when we speak or act.
Do your research now so you can start voting immediately
In just a couple weeks, we’ll start receiving our ballots in the mail. Voting on Day One—as soon as you get your ballot—helps Democrats win by boosting voter turnout. You’ll also stop receiving those reams of campaign mailers since those campaigns only send mail to people who haven’t voted yet, therefore voting early gets you off their lists.
We encourage you to start right away and take your time. Our ballots will be long, so the earlier you start, the more runway you’ll have to finish your ballot with plenty of time.
The best time to start is now. You don’t have your ballot yet, but you can read the California Voter Information Guide and the San Francisco Voter Information Pamphlet to educate yourself on the candidates and propositions on your ballot.
If you’re already registered to vote, you’ll get your ballot in your mailbox near the start of October. So another thing to do now is check your voter registration status, and if you need to update it or it turns out you’re not registered, register to vote.
- Check your voter registration status on the California Secretary of State’s My Voter Status website.
- If you need to, update your voter registration. In California, you can submit your voter registration online.
- Read your voter guides! California’s voter guide is already available online; San Francisco’s Voter Information Pamphlet is coming soon. We’ll have links to both as well as progressive endorsement slates on our Vote page. And don’t forget the Blue Voter Guide, which any voter in the country can use to identify the blue choices that suit them on their ballot.
- Reach out to voters in CA swing districts (or other swing states and districts!). We’re gathering on Sunday to write postcards over some pints at Standard Deviant, so that’s a great opportunity to start. We also have phone and text banking opportunities listed below. Need a phone banking tutorial? We have personal experience with SURJ National phone banks—they have great trainings and lots of support.
- Encourage friends and family to do the same. The more the merrier!

Home stretch on Rooftop Solar: Tell Gov. Newsom to Sign SB 1374, which protects rooftop solar.
Thanks to weeks of calls from Indivisibles like you, both the Assembly and the Senate have finally passed SB 1374, the net metering bill that protects rooftop solar. This is a great achievement for protecting our environment and lowering energy costs, but it faces one final hurdle: Governor Newsom. It is unclear whether Gov. Newsom will sign the bill, so let’s call him and tell him to sign it.

Keep pushing: Tell Gov. Newsom to Veto AB 2527, which allows solitary confinement for pregnant people!
The California legislature has passed a bill under the guise of prison reform that will actually do more harm than good for pregnant people.
This legislation, AB 2527, would allow prisons to place pregnant people in solitary confinement for up to five days. Solitary confinement has been clearly shown to cause long-term harm to all incarcerated people, pregnant or not. Instead of codifying the use of solitary confinement, we should be moving to eliminate it from our prison system entirely. This bill is on Gov. Newsom's desk, and we need to make sure he vetoes it!

COVID-19 vaccines are here. Get your shots now!
It’s important to keep up our protections against COVID-19, which is still making us sick and disabling people with long COVID.
- Wear a mask: San Francisco’s Department of Public Health has encouraged residents to wear masks in crowded indoor spaces, as have other public health authorities such as Contra Costa County’s.
- Get this year’s vaccine: New Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax vaccines are available now. You can make an appointment at your local pharmacy. Use Vaccines.gov to find available appointments near you.
- Get more rapid tests: The Biden-Harris administration is bringing back COVIDTests.gov at the end of September where you’ll be able to order four more rapid tests to your home address.
COVID-19 is a part of our present reality and will be for the foreseeable future. We can maintain healthy, full lives by acting accordingly. |
