Friends,

On Sept. 17th I attended the Secretary of State’s program to preregister 16- and 17-year-olds to vote. This is allowed by laws passed by the legislature. I do believe we should be doing a better job teaching civics and the importance of voter participation. I think this process leaves open doors for unintended consequences. At the event children were instructed to enter their names, addresses, and either driver’s license or the last 4 digits of their social security numbers. I did express concern about sharing this information. I am not sure that eases my concerns. I will be speaking with my grandchildren. It will be interesting to see if any underage children receive ballots during this election. I would also like to know if there will be other messages sent out to minors.

Sincerely,

Steve Green
