Our states and countries are facing unprecedented challenges. We must simultaneously fend off a global pandemic and save lives while ensuring financial stability and employment opportunities for all, but especially those hardest hit and in the most need.

More than 33 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits so far. The economic consequences caused by the Coronavirus are real. Families nationwide are struggling to make ends meet.

When the pandemic is over and we as a country, both in Congress and in legislatures state by state, begin to rebuild our economy, it's clear that we can not rebuild it as it was. We must focus our public investments on solutions that create good paying jobs and improve our environment. We must create sustainable businesses and industries that are also sustainable for the earth, people, and plants. When we come out of this, we will have a chance to re-imagine what our economy looks like, let's make sure our leaders know we're depending on them to make it happen.

Right now, we are addressing the immediate health and economic challenges caused by this pandemic. We must ensure our frontline workers have the protective gear they need to do their jobs and keep themselves and our communities safe. Governments and hospitals need to ensure our systems can handle the influx of the sick and the needs of those now out of work.

Our next focus must be on rebuilding our economy by putting millions of people to work to build a green and resilient infrastructure.

If we do this right, not only will we be able to put people back to work after the pandemic, but we will also combat the climate crisis, reduce air and water pollution, and restore working lands.

Building a green and resilient national infrastructure means modernizing the power grid, moving away from fossil fuels toward renewable energies, making sure homes, schools and businesses are energy efficient, and more.

Progressives understand that we are all stewards of the Earth. We recognize the importance of protecting our environment, and we know we can enact policies in the states that are a model for the nation and in Congress that are a model for the world.

It's up to us to make it happen.
