is Mariah and I’m a board member of March For Our Lives. This past week I
had the honor of attending the Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual
Legislative Conference.

Gun violence is an issue that’s close to my heart, and the opportunity to
speak about it meant a lot. [ [link removed] ]I’m going to tell you more about that but

my continued work with March For Our Lives?

I’m from Peoria, Illinois and we were ranked as the 10th deadliest city in
the country because of the murder rate per capita due to everyday gun
violence in Black and brown communities. 

Growing up hearing about this violence and seeing it in my community
motivated me to organize directly to take on gun violence. 

Across the entire country, gun violence is the leading cause of death for
children and teens — with the gun death rate for specifically black
children and teens being 18 TIMES higher than that of white children in
the same age group. 

Where I grew up, my home, and my community, are just a small example of
the problem plaguing our entire country. None of us are safe, but Black
and brown kids are even more at risk of facing gun violence. 

What do we need to feel safe? 

We need our kids to be safe in their schools, neighborhoods, and homes. No
one should have to fear that their life could be taken by senseless gun
violence. 

We need our leaders to step up and protect our lives instead of the gun
lobby. 

We need comprehensive gun safety legislation. 

That’s what we’re fighting for at March For Our Lives. 

We’re traveling across the country to mobilize the youth vote, meeting
with Congresspeople and other legislators, phone banking, uplifting and
supporting gun violence survivors, and more.
