I’m pleased to invite you to join us for The Sentencing Project's third Marc Mauer Racial Justice Award event on September 24th, where we will honor justice reform champions, Sam Lewis and Shaka Senghor.

This virtual event will be a celebration and provocative discussion around ending extreme sentences and eliminating racial injustice in order to achieve true community safety.

Established in 2020 by The Sentencing Project Board of Directors, and named for the organization’s longtime leader and national expert on sentencing policy, race and the criminal justice system, the Marc Mauer Racial Justice Award is bestowed on individuals who significantly advance understanding and engagement on issues of race and mass incarceration. The awardee also nominates an individual or organization of their choice to receive special recognition.

Sam Lewis
Executive Director - Anti Recidivism Coalition

Sam Lewis is the Executive Director of the Anti Recidivism Coalition. As a survivor of a life sentence, Sam understands the various obstacles, challenges, and difficulties the prison and reentry populations face. Before becoming the Executive Director, Sam served as the Director of Inside Programs where he created the Hope and Redemption Team (HART), engaging formerly incarcerated staff to lead rehabilitative programs in California prisons and prepare participants for successful reentry. HART is now a statewide program offered in every California State Prison. Since 2015, Sam has led a team of Credible Messenger Mentors to support youth and encourage them to pursue their education while housed at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall, now the Secure Youth Treatment Facility. 

Shaka Senghor

President/Creative Director - Shaka Senghor, Inc.

Shaka is the President/Creative Director of Shaka Senghor, Inc., and a distinguished author whose memoir, "Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death and Redemption in an American Prison," achieved recognition on the New York Times and The Washington Post best seller lists. His sophomore mainstream release, "Letters to the Sons of Society," was released in 2022 to critical acclaim. Shaka is a former MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow, and a former Fellow in the inaugural class of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Leadership Network. He has also taught at the University of Michigan. Today, Shaka’s priority is shifting societal narratives by creating content with deep social impact and high entertainment value.
