John,
Today is National Voter Registration Day.
Early voting for the 2024 November election kicks off this week in Pennsylvania, with several states to follow in the days and weeks to come. Millions of people across the country will cast their ballots leading up to Tuesday, November 5th, so it’s critically important that people make sure not only that they’re registered, but that their voter registration is up to date.
The United States has one of the largest decentralized voting systems in the world. Routine checks are done to make sure voter rolls are up to date and accurate, but we’re seeing an increase in election deniers challenging people’s voter registration, exploiting cracks in the voting system to overwhelm the boards of elections in small counties. They’re targeting people experiencing homelessness as well as students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
The New York Times recently explored how this is playing out in Georgia. After the 2020 election, the Georgia legislature passed a law that allowed any registered voter to file an unlimited number of voter registration challenges. Before the law changed, it was 10 challenges per person, per year. Over the past few years, about one dozen people have filed over 100,000 individual voter challenges in the state of Georgia.1
Fight back against voter suppression by checking your voter registration status at the National Voter Registration Day website.
Most states allow you to easily register online. Click here to check if your state allows online voter registration and go ahead and register, if you haven’t.
November’s election will decide who gets to make key decisions about human needs investments at the federal, state, and local levels. It’s imperative that everyone has their voice heard at the ballot box.
After you’ve checked that your voter registration is up to date, click here to donate and power our Vote for Human Needs campaign as we work to engage infrequent voters in key states for this year's election.
