* In 1848, before the gold rush, California's non-Indigenous population was around 15,000. By 1852, that number had skyrocketed to over 250,000 as people from all over the world flocked to the area in search of fortune.
* The Gold Rush had a devastating effect on California's environment, particularly through methods like hydraulic mining, which washed away entire hillsides and polluted rivers with sediment and chemicals.
