This is disturbing but unsurprising, John.
A new Gothamist article reports on disgusting texts between New York Police Department (NYPD) officers about a Black Lives Matter protest:
“Newly unveiled text messages show NYPD officers responding to a 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Mott Haven encouraged one another to “HAVE FUN” and “Kick their a–” before police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested hundreds of people, according to copies of the messages made public in connection with a pending lawsuit.”
It’s beyond clear that these officers planned to meet peaceful protesters fighting for Black lives with violence and brutality — and that’s exactly what they did.
Our pain, suffering, cries, and attempts to be seen and heard are seen as an opportunity for “fun” by the NYPD.
Enough is enough.
We need to defund the police. We demand investment in our communities and the resources to ensure Black people not only survive, but thrive.
These text message exchanges (and countless other incidents) have shown us what we already have known to be true for years: The police do NOT protect us, they never have, and they never will. We protect ourselves and our communities.
How much can we really expect from a system founded on anti-Black principles? Remember, police departments originated from slave patrolling. The police in America are built on a system that breeds corruption, and violence, and uplifts white supremacy.
Help us keep fighting back against police corruption and holding police accountable for their despicable actions.
Change isn’t going to happen overnight, but we’re not backing down until we achieve the real transformation we need.
