Hi, this is Congressmember Judy Chu. Did you know that today is National Voter Registration Day?
When I was a young girl, the idea of being involved in politics—or even serving in elected office—never crossed my mind. Why? I never saw anyone who looked like me holding these positions. The thought of running a campaign, winning, and serving my community seemed impossible.
But everything changed when an anti-immigrant English-only initiative arose in my hometown of Monterey Park. I couldn’t sit by and watch, so I joined others in my community to form a diverse, multiethnic group to fight back. Together, we succeeded, overturning the resolution. That experience opened my eyes to the incredible power of politics and, more importantly, the impact of participating in elections.
It was then that I realized our city council didn't reflect our community's diversity. So, I decided to take action. I ran for City Council, won, and had the honor of serving as Mayor, a State Assemblymember, and now, as a Member of Congress.
This journey taught me one crucial thing: the power of our voices at the ballot box cannot be overstated. Voting is more than just a right—it's the key to ensuring our interests are represented, laws reflect our values, and resources are allocated to improve our schools, roads, hospitals, and safety.
So, this November, I encourage you to use your voice. Gather your friends, family, and community members. Head to the polls and make sure your vote counts!
Together, we have the power to shape the future.
