Cornell. Of the many shocking reactions to the attacks of October 7, one that received much attention was Cornell Professor Russell Rickford’s speech at a rally on October 15, in which he called the October 7 massacre by Hamas “exhilarating” and “energizing.” After a brief hiatus from teaching, Rickford is back

instructing students at the Ithaca, New York Ivy. Cornell leadership decided not to bar him from teaching because he made those statements “as a private citizen in his free time.” This decision garnered quick condemnation from New Yorkers like U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney, who said she was “deeply disgusted” that Rickford would be allowed to “mold and influence young minds,” as well as Governor Kathy Hochul, whose office released a statement calling it “outrageous and unacceptable.” We agree with this bipartisan assessment.

MIT. Roughly 100 anti-Israel protesters
[link removed]
rallied on the Cambridge campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, chanting slogans for the school to “cut ties with Israel.” After two hours of speeches and chants, the protesters made their way to the office of MIT President Sally Kornbluth, where they chanted, waved flags and drummed on buckets. Organized by the Coalition Against Apartheid and dubbed “MIT, hands off the West Bank,” this protest represents MIT’s first major demonstration of the school year. Notably, 20 campus police officers were present at the protest, surrounding a barricade around the iconic steps of MIT’s main entrance.

SJP. National Students for Justice in Palestine announced yesterday that they will mark the Hamas massacre of 1,200 innocent men, women and children with a
[link removed]
“Week of Rage” from October 7 to October 11 (that evening, adding insult to injury, is the beginning of Yom Kippur). Organizers claim they are “rising” to “end our universities’ complicity in this genocide, to fight for the end of the colonization of Palestine, and to fight ‘for the complete liberation of Palestine from the river to the sea.’” As readers of the update know, this is a call for the complete eradication of the state of Israel, home to half the world’s Jews. Groups that have shared this post include SJP Temple University, ILPS, Boston University SJP and Miami University SJP. This militant rhetoric should serve as a
serious warning to university administrators about what these groups have in mind as the world commemorates 10/7.

Haverford. The Deborah Project, a public-interest law firm, recently amended a 278-page
[link removed]
complaint against Haverford College in Pennsylvania, accusing the college of “doubling down on every policy at issue” in the firm’s original Title VI complaint, in which they accused Haverford leadership of creating a hostile environment for Jewish students. One of the new incidents in the filing is that a professor of religion, with a history of anti-Israel hostility, wrote in a blog post that “Zionism is fundamentally a modern racist ideology that has next to nothing to do with Judaism as an ancient religion.” As Barak Mendelsohn, a political science professor at Haverford, told JNS: “I am absolutely not sure that we are safe. I am absolutely sure that
the administration doesn’t have our best interests in mind.”

Wichita State. The Wichita State University Student Government Association has overwhelmingly passed a

resolution denouncing antisemitism on campus, with 25 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions. This vote follows the discovery of

antisemitic notes on campus, one of which read “Jewish Physics” – a phrase historically used by the Nazi party to attack Jewish scientists like Albert Einstein. Following the vote, one member of the student government discussed on-campus antisemitism, saying, “Not here. Not Wichita State. That’s not us.”

Michigan. University of Michigan President Santa Ono released a

statement on Monday condemning the assault of a Michigan student who was attacked early Sunday morning after answering “yes” to the question “Are you Jewish?” Ono’s statement reiterated that “antisemitism has no place on campus and is antithetical to the core values of the University of Michigan,” urged anyone with information to share it with campus or local police, and concluded with the hope that “the perpetrators are fully held accountable for their actions.” ADL is offering a

reward of up to $5,000, funded by the Mizel Family Foundation, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Zionist Pride. Maya Shiloni, editorial editor of the Harvard Crimson, penned an article on Thursday
[link removed]
calling out her fellow students who have taken to using the term “Zionist” as a slur. She shares her frustration that so many of her fellow students and friends, “whom I otherwise respect – do their best to smear and delegitimize” the basic right of Jews to have self-determination in their ancestral homeland. Shiloni outlines how, if this type of vitriol was directed at any other movement, the student body would be “outraged,” but in this case “it's just politics.” Faced with antisemitism in the classroom and on social media, Maya reaffirms that this struggle “only strengthens my belief in the importance of a Jewish state,”
saying that as long as “Zionist” is viewed as a “dirty word,” “I will carry that scarlet letter with pride.”

Defining the Terms. U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres of New York’s 15th Congressional District has called for New York colleges and universities to follow the lead of New York University and adopt the working
[link removed]
definition of antisemitism developed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which recognizes anti-Zionism as a form of antisemitism, and has been embraced by 31 countries including the United States. In a social media post, Representative Torres said: “If you’re making antisemitic threats or tropes that substitute the word ‘Zionist’ for ‘Jew’, you’re guilty of both Anti-Zionism and antisemitism.”

Lending a Hand. Birthright Israel is turning a pilot volunteer program
[link removed]
launched in the days after the attacks of October 7 into a long-term initiative, raising funds and joining with groups like Mosaic United to recruit 10,000 volunteers every year. Already, 7,000 volunteers from 50 countries have helped Israeli communities with essential day-to-day tasks like farming, cleaning and unloading trucks. Birthright expects to send another 1,000 volunteers by the end of the year. “We started this as an experiment,” says Birthright Israel Foundation CEO Elias Saratovsky. “We saw a massive demand from Diaspora Jews [to do something], and we saw a massive need in Israel. None of those have dissipated since we launched the project.”

Wonder Woman Wows. In a virtual symposium on Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the launch of the
[link removed]
“Voice of the People” initiative, a project aimed at uniting Jewish voices from around the world to highlight Jewish unity and resilience. At that symposium, Israeli actress Gal Gadot led an emotional discussion on the impacts of the October 7 massacre, saying “I feel like there is life before October 7 and life after [...] But through all the horror, there is something amazing about our people—no revenge, just hope, light, and love.” President Herzog also shared his belief that “This is a time of great trial for Jews everywhere, but out of this crisis, there will be opportunity.” Moving forward, Voice of the People will convene 150 Jewish leaders
every month to develop strategies and solutions to address antisemitism, Israel-Diaspora relations, security concerns and other challenges facing the global Jewish community.
