John, Godwin was a bright young boy who loved to learn in school. When he was 17 years old, a woman claiming to be a relative offered to take him on a trip to meet his extended family. Godwin, still committed to his studies, brought his schoolbooks so he could study on the trip.

Instead of taking him to his extended family, the woman trafficked Godwin to work in Ghana’s brutal fishing industry. Suddenly alone, Godwin was forced to fish the very next day. His books were thrown away and he was told “there will be no free time for learning.”

For two years, Godwin was trapped in torment until — thanks in large part to our Freedom Partner community — IJM and local authorities were able to rescue him and other children held on the lake.
