Actions for the week of September 16, 2024
Happy September, Activists!
As another fall season draws near, it’s the perfect time to take these climate actions and help bring down Big Oil.
Action 1
🧾⛽️🫷 Make Polluters Pay
In NY State
New Yorkers are already footing a steep price for climate disasters — $3.5 billion in just the last two years — and many other protection and resilience programs are on hold due to a lack of funding.
This spring, New York’s state legislature passed the groundbreaking Climate Change Superfund Act (S.2129B and A.3351B), which would force major fossil fuel companies to pay their fair share for climate damages in New York State. It would raise $3 billion a year to fix roads and bridges, upgrade our schools, and make our communities more resilient, while holding climate polluters to account.
Tell Governor Hochul to stop dragging her feet and sign the Climate Change Superfund Act into law now!
At the Federal Level
Thanks to Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Jerry Nadler, we have the chance to make polluters pay on a federal level as well! Hollen and Nadler have introduced groundbreaking legislation designed to hold the largest fossil fuel companies accountable for knowingly contributing to the climate crisis.
The Polluters Pay Climate Fund will be used to remediate the impacts of climate change through various ways, including:
- Rebuilding and upgrading infrastructure
- Cleaning up pollution impacts in frontline communities
- Providing climate-related disaster assistance
- 40% of the Fund is set aside for investments benefiting environmental justice communities.
Tell your senators to support this bill and #MakePollutersPay.
Action 2
🪑🏦🤝 Citi Standoff: Come Down or Shutdown
📆 Monday, September 23, 10:00 am
📍 Outside Citigroup Global HQ • 388 Greenwich St, New York, NY • Map
For months leaders from Louisiana and Texas who suffer from the impacts of fossil fuel development have been trying to schedule a sit down meeting with Citi Executives to discuss the harms their investments are causing in communities across the Gulf South. In July, several representatives from Citi’s PR department met on Zoom with Gulf leaders, but repeated requests for a follow-up sit down meeting have not been honored.
Organizers from the Summer of Heat Campaign are threatening to shut down Citi HQ if executives refuse to meet with the Gulf leaders, so sign up to show Citi that they cannot ignore the people! There is also an option to engage in non-violent civil disobedience if you feel inclined.
