Who Can Get Appointments at NYC’s Asylum Application Help Center, And Who Can’t?

Opened in 2023, the city's Asylum Application Help Cener in Midtown Manhattan has helped file more than 67,000 applications for asylum, temporary protected status, and work authorization on behalf of new immigrant New Yorkers.

But qualifying for an appointment is not so simple. Migrants must still be in the shelter system or have recently left it. And while city-contracted providers that aid migrants can refer clients there, they can only do so if the person is “within 4 weeks of their one-year filing deadline,” reads a document outlining the rules obtained by City Limits, delaying the economic advantages that come with filing for asylum, like the ability to apply for a work permit.
