Despite the state’s concession of serious errors, by the prior administration, in the prosecution of Marcellus Williams, only days remain until the state of Missouri is set to execute Marcellus for a crime he did not commit. Now is the time to act and urge Gov. Mike Parson to stop Marcellus’ execution.

During a hearing on Aug. 28, the prosecutor who originally helped convict Marcellus, Keith Larner, made a series of stunning admissions revealing conflicts in the state of Missouri’s case. These issues include:

• Handling the murder weapon without any gloves or protection before testing could be completed.
• Relying on the testimony of two unreliable witnesses — each paid $5,000 — with Mr. Larner admitting he requested one of the witnesses be paid before trial to ensure cooperation.
• Striking prospective jurors because of their race.

And yet on Sept. 12, Circuit Court Judge Bruce Hilton denied the motion to vacate Marcellus’ conviction and death sentence.

The court failed to do the right thing. Now, Marcellus’ fate lies with Gov. Parson.
