Click here John, For over 25 years WCV has worked to hold our elected officials accountable and ensure they are working to protect Washington’s environment for all. That has never been more important than right now. This pandemic has shown us what happens when science and the experts are ignored, and the institutions we rely on to protect us are weakened. As advocates, it’s our job to push our elected officials to respond boldly to protect Washingtonians' public health and economy now and from ongoing crises like climate change. We are committed to ensuring you know where our leaders stand. Every two years, Washington Conservation Voters releases the Legislative Scorecard, grading state legislators on how they voted. Did your legislators vote for environmental justice, implementing policies to address the climate crisis, and protect people, fish, and orcas from toxic harm? Find out your legislators’ scores for 2019-2020 >> This 2019-2020 Scorecard highlights that while significant progress was made there is still no comprehensive plan to address climate change and meet the state’s emissions goals. Nonetheless, together with the Legislature we celebrated two monumental victories for the environment in 2019 by passing a first-in-the-nation 100% Clean Electricity law and the first significant change to the Model Toxics Control Act since it was passed by the voters in 1988, which increases revenue to clean-up toxic waste sites throughout the state. You and I know that elections have real consequences. The Governor continues to lead on climate and the environment, in partnership with the House, but the Senate has to make more meaningful progress. Democrat and Republican leadership alike must place elected officials who value our environment and believe in science in leadership positions. See what votes counted toward your legislators’ scores >> We are making progress: The Legislature passed significant bills on orca protection, but it’s just the start of what needs to be done for recovery. We worked hard to ensure that the Legislature takes environmental justice into account, but we must go further. We still have not addressed climate pollution from transportation, our state’s number one source of emissions. We have less than eight years, according to the best science, to stem the worst of the climate crisis – we must act with more urgency and be bold. Over the last two years, influential polluters like the oil and chemical industries stopped our key environmental priority, a Clean Fuel Standard, and stalled it in the Senate. Regardless of party affiliation, a majority of Washingtonians support progress on the environment. Taking care of the home we all share is a deeply embedded value for all Washingtonians. We have more work to do, and we need leaders committed to clean air and clean water for all. Check out WCV’s Scorecard – and let your legislators know you did. Thank them for putting the health and the future of Washingtonians first if they scored well. If any of your legislators scored poorly, urge them to step up and protect this place we call home. WCV will always work to hold our elected officials accountable and ensure they reflect the values all Washingtonians share for clean, healthy communities and a protected environment. Thanks for all you do, Shannon Murphy |
