College sports in the U.S. are undergoing a tectonic shift. A decade of antitrust cases contesting NCAA restrictions on athlete compensation, state-level “NIL" laws, and pressures to unionize college athletes are all in play. And a proposed multi-billion dollar legal settlement promises to reshape the model of college sports, with serious consequences for all except the most lucrative Division I men’s football and basketball programs.
The Progressive Policy Institute’s (PPI’s) “Game Changers” project is unpacking the impact of these changes. PPI’s focus is on the shifting balance between amateurism and professionalism, opportunity and equity in college sports, and the appropriate policy tools for managing change. PPI is hosting a briefing on September 19, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. in Rayburn Room 2060, where PPI's Diana Moss will facilitate a panel discussion with leading experts in college sports.
Confirmed panelists include:
- Diana Moss, Vice President and Director of Competition Policy at the Progressive Policy Institute
- Joel Shinofield, Managing Director of Sport Development, USA Swimming
- Aaron Rouse, Virginia State Senator and former NCAA football and NFL player
- Meredith Geisler, Assistant Professor of Sport Management at George Washington University
Breakfast will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!
