Friend,

The appliances we use to keep things cool are warming the atmosphere at an alarming rate.

Potent greenhouse gases called HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) are used as refrigerants to promote cooling in appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners. These gases leak out through faulty equipment and intensify the climate crisis. In fact, they have thousands of times the heating power of carbon dioxide.

That’s why our new Cool It campaign is urging supermarkets, major sources of HFC emissions, to make big improvements. And we’re starting with Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers and supermarkets. Tell Walmart to take action on HFCs today!

Walmart’s annual HFC emissions are the equivalent of powering nearly every household in San Francisco and make up 46 percent of its total direct emissions that warm the climate. Walmart has stated that it’s “transitioning away” from refrigerants with high global warming potential but has not released concrete goals on making this a reality in all its stores.

Better refrigerant management, such as swapping HFC refrigerants with sustainable alternatives and reducing leaks, is identified as a critical step to fighting climate change. There are a few supermarket chains, like Aldi and Target, who are leading on cutting these harmful emissions, but Walmart is not one of them.

We are urging Walmart to phase out harmful HFCs, track and repair its refrigerant leaks, and commit to responsible refrigerant disposal to reduce emissions.

Join us by signing our petition and telling Walmart to Cool It for the climate!
