Empowered Early: John Simon III's Story In honor of Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, we’re sharing the inspiring story of John Simon III, a teenager whose struggles with weight, health and bullying led him to the OAC's National Convention in 2023, where he connected with other youth through our Empower Early initiative. After undergoing bariatric surgery, John's quality of life improved drastically — but it wouldn't have been possible without the support of his family, church and community. |

OAC Responds to New CDC Obesity Maps, Calls for Expanded Access to Care Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data in the U.S., revealing that 23 states now report more than one in three adults are living with obesity. While these statistics often make headlines, they reinforce what the OAC has always advocated: obesity is a chronic and complex disease, and individuals deserve access to comprehensive and science-based treatment options, just like those for other diseases. |

Take a Stand Against Weight-based Bullying This Childhood Obesity Awareness Month Did you know that approximately 24% of boys and 30% of girls experience daily bullying and rejection because of their size? That number doubles by the time teens enter high school. So many of us can remember (and so many more can only imagine) being ridiculed, taunted and isolated as a kid struggling with weight. Bullying can cause extreme physical and mental health issues. |

This September, join the OAC in taking action to protect children from weight-based bullying in schools. Weight stigma is real, and it's harmful. Use the OAC Action Center to urge your governor and education leaders to ensure schools include protections against weight-based bullying in their codes of conduct! You can also support the cause by donating to the OAC Action Fund, which we are expanding to fund programming, training and resources to fight childhood obesity and weight-based bullying. |
