The Grim Reality of Wolf Survival
By age 7, a wolf is considered “old”. They are faced with many obstacles. Along with injuries from prey and starvation; most wolf mortalities are human caused including legal and illegal shootings, poisoning, car collisions and liberal rules for killing wolves involved in livestock conflicts. Most pups born in the spring, will not see their first birthday. Many states have inadequate state protections in place.
Wyoming currently allows snowmobilers to run over wolves and other wildlife, but a draft bill would make it illegal to intentionally injure or disable a predatory animal, including wolves, with a snowmobile or other vehicle, unless the animal is killed immediately after being struck. Failing to kill the animal quickly enough could result in a $1,000 fine for animal cruelty. [The only difference with this legislation is they will have to do it quickly. But what is quickly?]
The proposal in Montana would allow 334 wolves to be killed in the upcoming hunting season – 24 more than last year.
Upon delisting, Wisconsin has a legislative mandate that a wolf hunting and trapping season will take place. Wisconsin is the only state that allows the use of dogs to pursue wolves,
