SEPTEMBER 2024

This issue is dedicated to all the wolves across our country whose howl has been silenced.

The Grim Reality of Wolf Survival

By age 7, a wolf is considered “old”. They are faced with many obstacles. Along with injuries from prey and starvation; most wolf mortalities are human caused including legal and illegal shootings, poisoning, car collisions and liberal rules for killing wolves involved in livestock conflicts. Most pups born in the spring, will not see their first birthday. Many states have inadequate state protections in place.

Wyoming currently allows snowmobilers to run over wolves and other wildlife, but a draft bill would make it illegal to intentionally injure or disable a predatory animal, including wolves, with a snowmobile or other vehicle, unless the animal is killed immediately after being struck. Failing to kill the animal quickly enough could result in a $1,000 fine for animal cruelty. [The only difference with this legislation is they will have to do it quickly. But what is quickly?]

The proposal in Montana would allow 334 wolves to be killed in the upcoming hunting season – 24 more than last year.

Upon delisting, Wisconsin has a legislative mandate that a wolf hunting and trapping season will take place. Wisconsin is the only state that allows the use of dogs to pursue wolves,

POACHING

Most, if not all, states have a “Report all Poaching” hotline where you can report all wildlife violations, not just the illegal killing of wolves and other wildlife.

Learn the rules in your community regarding what and when a species can be hunted or trapped, baiting regulations, the use of hunting blinds on public lands and other hunting rules. Very often, the offender will inadvertently post on social media an illegal bait pile in the background of a photo.

If you see something suspicious, do something. Take a screen shot. If you come upon illegal activity while on a hike, do not approach or confront the offender.

Do not be afraid to report what you see or hear. You can remain anonymous. Wildlife belongs to all of us.

NATIONAL WOLF CONVERSATION

As a result of the lawsuit filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, the Fish and Wildlife Service must create a national wolf recovery plan.

As part of that process, USFWS has hired Francine Madden to mediate the conversations and lead the effort.

For the past few months she has been holding Phase 1 virtual discussions, through her firm Constructive Conflict. Anyone interested can participate

The next 2 sessions are scheduled for 9/18/2024 or 10/9/2024 at 11 am eastern time. You must register.  If the sessions are full, or the times do not fit in your schedule, there is a place for you to register your interest for future Virtual Discussion #1 sessions.
