A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
BRENT J. COHEN
As we enter fall, we recognize several significant milestones in our mission to create safer and more just communities across America. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, which established our Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. We're also celebrating 40 years of the Bureau of Justice Assistance and four decades since the passage of the Victims of Crime Act, which created the Crime Victims Fund that is managed by our Office for Victims of Crime and that supports thousands of local victim assistance programs nationwide.
Recently, I had the privilege of joining Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Ben Mizer at an event commemorating another significant anniversary—30 years since the passage of the landmark Violence Against Women Act. This groundbreaking legislation was born from the tireless advocacy of survivors of gender-based violence, whose voices provided the impetus for change.
Over the years, OJP has worked closely with the Office on Violence Against Women to support survivor services and advance the cause of justice for victims of gender-based violence. We continue to honor the spirit of VAWA by elevating survivor voices in our policy and program decisions, ensuring that those with lived experience guide our efforts to create lasting change.

As we reflect on these anniversaries, we're reminded of the progress we've made and the work that lies ahead.
In this issue, you'll find information on the 2024 OJJDP National Conference, new funding opportunities and resources for Recovery Month 2024.
As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate your interest in the work of OJP.
*Brent J. Cohen

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
*NIJ Helps to Enhance Research Capacity at John Jay College of Criminal Justice*
NIJ
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we proudly highlight a new initiative led by John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a designated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Recently, OJP’s National Institute of Justice awarded John Jay College a $1 million grant to establish the NIJ’s Center for Enhancing Research Capacity at MSIs. This grant award reflects a commitment of NIJ to support research capacity building and innovation at MSIs.
The newly established NIJ Center addresses critical challenges faced by MSIs, including underfunding in research and development (R&D) that limits their ability to drive innovation and contribute to critical societal issues. With its mission to bolster MSIs' research competitiveness, increase funding opportunities, and expand the network of MSI researchers dedicated to criminal and juvenile justice, the Center is set to transform the research landscape.
Through this grant, John Jay College will spearhead initiatives that aim to elevate MSIs into thriving centers of research excellence and innovation. These efforts will ensure that MSIs have a meaningful role in shaping policy, advancing justice, and driving societal progress with diverse scholarly contributions. As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the importance of such investments in supporting MSIs, honoring their pivotal role in shaping the future of justice and equity across the nation.
