This International Day of Democracy, Register for Trust Conference

Despite half the global population heading to the polls this year, democracy is in decline. From electoral integrity to freedom of expression, the pillars of democracy are under attack, receding in countries around the world. In our opening panel at Trust Conference, Maria Ressa, Kara Swisher, Barbara Serra and Steve Hasker will discuss surging threats to global democracy, and whether we can turn the tide on its decline.

At the start of this year, AI was widely anticipated to supercharge election disinformation. But it also has the potential to promote and enhance public participation, equality, and security. In an era of technological innovation, we'll be assessing the impact of AI on election processes and outcomes. To harness the benefits and mitigate the risks, it is essential that effective and co-ordinated governance of AI systems keeps pace with its development.

We'll also hear from Jeff Allen, Ritu Kapur, Claire Leibowicz, and Yasir Khan, on how platforms can combat disinformation and moderate content to safeguard democracy.

Digging tools for investigative journalists covering elections: Spotlight on GlJN

Good journalism is a core pillar of democracy. But this year, we are witnessing increasingly malign tactics used to suppress democracy. To help combat these tactics, Trust Conference content partner GIJN has updated its essential guide for investigative journalists covering elections [[link removed]]. The guide explores often-overlooked election-digging strategies that can be adopted to expose efforts to cheat voters or silence critics.

GIJN is now offering the opportunity to hear first-hand how some of these tools have been used to uncover voter suppression in the upcoming US election.
