The NRA is losing

Dear John,

This week, the Supreme Court struck down an NRA-backed lawsuit that sought to roll back nearly every gun safety law across the country. The NRA and its allies were pushing for a radical reinterpretation of the Second Amendment — one that would have risked repealing the most basic gun safety laws.

But on Monday, the Supreme Court ruled to call the case moot, delivering a huge blow to the troubled NRA!

We can’t stress this enough:
We’re fighting the NRA, and we’re winning!

When the justices heard arguments back in December, we mobilized our base, arriving at 4 a.m. and braving the cold and rain to rally outside of the Supreme Court.

We won against the NRA this time, but another attack on gun safety is imminent. Already, Justice Brett Kavanaugh signaled he wants to hear another Second Amendment case. Right now, we need to unite and show our power against the NRA’s dangerous agenda.

A new Second Amendment case could be announced as early as Monday. Sign our petition and join Brady in the fight to protect and uphold lifesaving gun safety laws!

Honor With Action: Remembering the Attack Poway

Monday marked one year since the anti-Semitic attack on the Chabad of Poway in California. A white supremacist armed with an AR-15 shot and killed congregant Lori Kaye and injured three others during a celebration for the last day of Passover. One year after this targeted attack on the Jewish community, we must continue to #DisarmHate and honor with action.

California has a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, but the 19-year-old Poway gunman was able to use an expired hunting license to purchase the assault rifle. While California has some of the strongest gun laws in the country, lack of federal law allows those who intend to cause harm to easily access firearms. That’s why we are calling on Congress to pass a federal ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines! John, help us honor with action and demand Congress pass a federal ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines!

Brady Legal Works to Uphold Guns Ordinances Enacted After the Tree of Life Massacre

Brady Legal filed an amicus brief supporting the city of Pittsburgh in its efforts to uphold three gun ordinances passed in the wake of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre that killed 11 people and injured six others. These ordinances, some of which regulate the use of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in public places, are common-sense measures designed to save lives, but a pro-gun group sued the city claiming that its gun ordinances were illegal. We won't let that stand — which is why we're taking legal action! We’ll keep you updated on this case. It's one of the many ways we're fighting to defend our nation's gun laws. Learn more about Brady Legal by signing up for our monthly newsletter!

Live in Maryland? Tell Gov. Hogan to Fund the Maryland Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP)!

Right now, Baltimore’s violence interruption programs are more critical than ever: many Black and Brown communities that are disproportionately impacted by chronic violence are also being affected by COVID-19 at high rates. We're calling on Gov. Larry Hogan to sign SB 708 to fund VIPP. This vital legislation will provide $3.6 million in funding to help local violence intervention and prevention programs break the cycles of violence. Tell Gov. Hogan to sign SB 708 now!

🎧 The Dual Threats of Guns and Coronavirus
Last week we covered how the coronavirus pandemic has led to a rise in reported xenophobic and racist attacks on members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. This week, we continue our discussion on how incidents of hate crimes against the AAPI community are up, as is fear within the community that firearms will be used against them. We're joined by Dr. Russel Jeung, Chair and Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. Listen now!

Brady Donor Spotlight: Kristin Anundsen, a Brady Supporter for Over 20 Years!

Kristin Anundsen (r) with Jessica Simon, National Director of Leadership Councils

Kristin Anundsen is involved in many causes and has supported Brady since we were called Handgun Control, Inc! At 80 years young, she lives in San Francisco and is active in women’s rights issues, the arts, climate change activism, and more.

She started to support Brady because she “was just so astounded that the NRA and the gun dealers and manufacturers did not seem to care if people died because of guns.” She started her activism with anti-war protests in the 1960s and continued after moving to San Francisco.

The most recent protest she joined was the youth protest for climate change in San Francisco. She feels our nation’s youth are our hope for the future, including when it comes to their leadership on gun reform. “That's what gives me hope, all these young people saying we have to stand up for this," said Kristin. Want to learn more about Kristin and how to support Brady? It's been seven years since Sandy Hook, four years since Pulse, two years since Parkland, two years since Las Vegas, one year since Tree of Life, nine months since El Paso, and no action has been taken by the White House to ban assault weapons.

And yet it took Canada little more than ONE WEEK after a massacre to ban these weapons of war.

This is what leadership looks like! Send a tweet thanking Trudeau for modeling leadership to save lives.

“We applaud the Supreme Court for rejecting the gun lobby’s call to use this moot challenge to a defunct ordinance as an opportunity to radically expand the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment can and should allow for strong, effective gun violence prevention laws."
