Rest Days vs Recovery Days LessWrong
Sree VijaykumarLike Ben Hoffman, I stumbled upon and rediscovered the Sabbath (although my implementation seems different from both Ben and Zvi). I was experiencing burnout at CFAR, and while I wasn't able to escape the effects entirely, I found some refuge in the following distinction between Rest Days and Recovery Days.

A Recovery Day is where you're so tired or under-resourced that you can't do much of anything with yourself other than: stay in bed / sleep a lot, binge on Netflix or video games, stay in your room all day, play with your phone, use social media, and feel unmotivated to do much except easy, stimulating, and/or mind-numbing things. This is a Recovery Day and does not count as a Rest Day, but it is fine to take the time for them. However you aren't going to be refreshed from them. In order to really refresh, you need to take another day that counts as a Rest Day.

Why Companies Should Consolidate Tech Roles in the C-Suite - Harvard Business Review (No paywall)
Recently, some organizations have begun to recognize the downside of C-level proliferation and decided to consolidate senior technology and data roles. Leaders of specialty tech and data functions (data, analytics, AI, cybersecurity) report to them. Establishing SuperTech leadership roles will bring clarity and accountability to organizations’ digital transformation initiatives.

What if Ronald Reagan's Presidency Never Really Ended? - The New Yorker (No paywall)
For many people, the 2016 election was a catastrophe. For Max Boot, it was a betrayal. He'd been a movement conservative: a loud voice for the Iraq War, an editor of The Weekly Standard, and an adviser to the campaigns of John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Marco Rubio. Boot took heart when Republicans initially closed ranks against Donald Trump's candidacy. Trump is "a madman who must be stopped," Bobby Jindal said. "The man is utterly amoral," Ted Cruz agreed. Rubio called him "the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the Presidency." For Rick Perry, he was "a cancer on conservatism." Then, one by one, they all endorsed him, and he won.

Sport is getting hotter, harder and deadlier - The Economist (No paywall)
“One player gonna die,” complained Daniil Medvedev in the middle of a match on the hottest day of the US Open in New York last year, as the temperature soared to 34°C. “It’s been brutal…it ruins everything.” Similar temperatures—combined with higher humidity—sometimes made conditions even more punishing at this year’s tournament that ended on September 8th. Players struggled and vomited; in the breaks they packed bags of ice around their necks and heads, or stuck hoses blowing cold air down their shirts in an effort to cool down. Sweltering in the steeply sloping cheaper seats was the largest crowd ever: in all, some 1m spectators attended the competition, fulfilling a goal the organisers had set in 2019.

The US drinking-age law could be a model for fixing the housing crisis - Business Insider (No paywall)
The federal government is much more likely to rely on incentives — or carrots — when it comes to housing policy. The construction and regulation of homes in the US are almost entirely controlled by state and local governments; the president and Congress don't have a ton of power to shape what gets built where. But lawmakers in Washington do have money. So they tend to use federal funding to reward housing policies they like.

Trump's Proposal to End Taxes on Overtime Pay Could Cost Billions
There is also the issue of how many Americans could benefit from Mr. Trump’s idea. More than 34 million Americans worked over 40 hours a week in 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but only a subset of that group are owed time-and-a-half pay for overtime under federal law. The rules are complex, but in general Americans earning a salary of more than $43,888 a year may not be owed overtime, depending on their job. Americans paid by the hour, currently about 55 percent of the work force, are broadly eligible for overtime pay.
