My name is Mars Rodriguez, Managing Director here at Ground Game Texas. Today, I wanted to share with you something that’s been top of mind heading into this election.
Ten years ago last month, when I was 15, my stepfather passed away. What my family and I always understood was that if my father had consistent healthcare throughout the later half of his life, he would still be here today.
One year after he passed, at 16 years old, I learned about a policy called Medicare for All from an old man from Vermont who was running for president. Learning that something like Medicare for All could even exist, changed my life forever and catapulted me into now nine years of political organizing across the entire country.
My story is not all that unique - both in the loss I’ve experienced and in the hope I have found fighting for real tangible change. For me and so many others, it has never been about one politician or one lone voice. Here at Ground Game, we organize with folks all across Texas who understand that it is progressive policy that drives voters to the polls, not just politicians.
With a $50 or $100 contribution, we can continue and expand our work to drive up voter turnout with strong, tangible progressive policy all across Texas.
John, imagine what statewide political change would mean for families like mine in Texas. Maybe we wouldn’t have “Medicare for All,” but we would definitely have Medicaid expansion, like most other states in the nation. Families like mine would have better health care access, better public schools, a government that cares about things like climate change and racial justice.
I’ve traveled the country in recent years while working on elections, and I’ve been asked many times how it’s possible to have hope for Texas. My answer is pretty simple: Texas is my home, and it’s home to some of the most unapologetically bold and progressive organizers I’ve ever known. We deserve better, and our communities deserve better.
