James’ story is an important example of how anti-voter tactics can keep us from the ballot box, and prevent us from using our voice.

“Why would someone challenge my vote?”

James, a Gulf War veteran living in Georgia, was shocked to receive a letter informing him that someone was challenging his voter status. During a period of homelessness, James registered to vote using the address of the barbershop where he worked. 

The letter made it clear: his voter registration could be canceled if he didn't take action. 

His challenger? One of a handful of right-wing self-appointed activists who are attempting to purge Georgia’s voter rolls ahead of the presidential election. Fair Fight is fighting back, as we always do when voting rights are under attack from extremists. But as November approaches, we need resources to keep up.

In 2021, Georgia Republicans passed a law, SB 202, that made it easier for private citizens to challenge the eligibility and qualifications of an unlimited number of voters within their county. This year, the Republican majority in the Georgia legislature passed SB 189, a new anti-voter law that builds on SB 202 and facilitates filing mass challenges. With these two laws in effect, we expect to see an uptick in voter challenges as we approach November.

Mass challenges are designed to confuse voters and suppress their votes. If our votes didn’t matter, they wouldn’t try so hard to limit our access to the ballot box.

Thankfully, James was able to update his address and remain registered, but he still feels his challenger was trying to silence his voice.

We know it will take a full-scale organizing effort to push back against these anti-voter tactics and ensure free and fair elections for all. With grassroots support from folks like you, Fair Fight can take action for every voter like James who refuses to be silenced.
