John,
Without community members fighting childhood hunger in schools across the country, millions of kids would not get the food they need every day to learn, play and dream big.
These heroes who play a critical role in ending childhood hunger depend on the generosity of supporters like YOU to make their work possible. Will you give $50 or more now to help us reach our $50,000 goal to support those who provide children with their most important school supply?
Scott Germain says his work for hungry children stems from a powerful realization he once had: “Kids can't learn if they're hungry."
As the director of nutrition services at Garrett County Public Schools in Maryland, Scott now leads a team that works tirelessly to provide school meals throughout the year in a region where many families are struggling and have limited access to transportation.
To extend his meals program into the summer, Scott even purchased a trailer with the support of No Kid Hungry Maryland that he retrofitted into a mobile meals truck — complete with serving counters and seating.
In New Orleans, Rosie Jackson and her team are proud to provide 45,000 kids with school meals every day.
“Our employees — once they're there, they're there for the long haul. We don't have a lot of turnover,” Rosie says. “They are dedicated; they get up every day and come to work. That’s because they have a love for the job and for these children."
Rosie herself has been working in the district since 1971. But even she admits that school food service is a really tough job. That’s why she’s grateful to have been able to expand her staff’s hours and purchase equipment to expand school breakfast with the support of No Kid Hungry.
Beyond working to feed children, some school heroes also work to address the issues causing hunger in the first place.
Vickie Coffey is a nutrition services and healthy schools director at RBB Edgewood Schools in Ellettsville, Indiana — and she is a tireless advocate for addressing the stigma of child hunger.
Her work helped remove the barrier of stigma to expand her community’s free breakfast program. Of the 2,700 students in the district, nearly half of them (1,300) utilize the free breakfast program.
There are so many people like Scott, Rosie and Vickie at schools across the country who are making a life-changing difference for hungry children every day — but so much of their heroic work is only possible thanks to supporters like you.
That’s why we’ve set a $50,000 goal to support these community heroes as they ensure that kids are equipped with the most important school supply this school year. Will you please make an urgent gift of $50 or more NOW to help support school staff as they provide kids with the meals and resources they need to thrive at school?
Thank you,
No Kid Hungry
