John, this Hunger Action Month, I am taking action in Congress with multiple pieces of legislation to continue the fight against childhood hunger.

Last week, it was by introducing the School Hunger Elimination Act , which would directly certify all school-age students receiving Medicaid or SNAP in the National School Lunch Program.

As a teacher, I know firsthand that for many students, school is the only place where they receive a healthy meal. Hungry kids do not learn, yet nearly one in five children live in households without consistent access to adequate nutrition. Our common-sense approach would change that.

But our work does not stop there. This week, I also introduced the School Food Security Act , which removes barriers to accessing SNAP for low-income college students.

As a teenage mom, I returned to community college. I know what it means when these barriers are removed and students get the help they need, from the youngest students to those getting a college degree.

Together, these two bills would remove administrative barriers across tens of thousands of schools and strengthen a program that already serves millions of children.

This is the approach I have taken in advocating for our students in CT-05.
