Friend, Communist China is the most significant threat to the United States’ security, economy, and global leadership. For decades, the U.S. has taken a delicate approach to our relationship with Communist China, hoping that if we brought them into the rules-based international order, they would act accordingly. As Former Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger said, “We have to stop kidding ourselves that we can turn a great white shark into a bottlenose dolphin by treating it sweetly. It is a shark.” That’s why the Select Committee on Competition with Communist China has created an expansive policy blueprint to bolster our military readiness, protect our food security, and combat the CCP’s influence and spy operations within our borders. This week, House Republicans took significant steps to enact key elements of this blueprint and strengthen our competitive edge against China. Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act: strengthens our oversight of foreign ag land purchases to prevent China from buying more of our farmland. Decoupling from Foreign Adversarial Battery Dependence Act: forbids the federal government from procuring batteries from six companies owned and operated in China that use forced labor and participate in the horrific genocide against the Uyghurs. No WHO Pandemic Preparedness Treaty Without Senate Approval Act: requires any WHO convention or agreement to be ratified by the U.S. Senate, limiting the WHO's influence over American public health decisions and protecting our sovereignty. BIOSECURE Act: Protects Americans' genetic data from predatory CCP-linked companies. I will continue working to stand up to Communist China and put America first. Best, Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act China continues to buy up American farmland at an alarming rate. They’re aiming to gain control over our food and fuel supply chains, stealing American intellectual property, and strategically purchasing land next to sensitive sites. This week, I’m proud to share that the House passed the bipartisan Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act – legislation I helped introduce alongside Rep. Dan Newhouse. This bill gives the Secretary of Agriculture a seat at the table at the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to strengthen oversight over foreign purchases of ag land. Watch my full floor remarks on the bill here. Iowa Association of School Boards It was great to meet with the Iowa Association of School Boards this week!
