Dear neighbor,
While I have been in Washington this week, my team and I have been closely monitoring the developing land movement situation in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. My thoughts are with all those families impacted by recent evacuation orders and utility shutoffs. Governor Newsom’s recent declaration of a State of Emergency for Rancho Palos Verdes will help the City respond to the devastating impacts of land movement. My team is in touch with impacted families and are working closely with city, county and state officials, as well as evaluating what federal resources may be available.
I am committed to continuing my work with state, county and local partners to ensure resident safety across the area and stand ready to assist with any federal aid that may be requested in the weeks to come.
If you or your loved ones have been impacted by recent land movement and utility shutoffs in the Rancho Palos Verdes area, please stay updated via Rancho Palos Verdes’ land movement community news page. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District is also offering resources to students and families facing the effects of utility shutoffs, including additional before and after school care, technology resources and mental health counseling for students.
As always, my staff and I are ready to assist you.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: As wildfire season begins in California, it’s important to stay prepared for emergencies. Please brush up on your disaster readiness practices with Listos California and Ready LA County.
This week in Congress felt like Groundhog Day all over again. As we come back from the August Work Period, we’re facing yet another government shutdown at the hands of the Republican majority. They started the 118th Congress by threatening to default on our nation’s debts, took out their own Speaker and have driven us to the brink of a catastrophic government shutdown multiple times. It is past time for Republicans to join House Democrats to make the government run for the American people. Check out my full remarks from this week’s House Democratic Caucus leadership press conference below.
Here’s what else I worked on this week in Washington:
- Honored those we lost 23 years ago and our brave first responders on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks
- Introduced the Enhancing Subnational Diplomacy Act to support city and state-level international diplomacy ahead of the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics hosted by Los Angeles
- Called out Trump’s plan to eliminate the National Weather Service (and other crazy weird ideas) as proposed in his Project 2025 agenda
- Spoke with Axios about the impacts of AI on our workforce
I look forward to updating you again soon.
Warmly,
Ted
