‌
Dear Friends,

It has been a heart wrenching few weeks as our community continues to collectively mourn the ruthless murders of six hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th. May their memories always be a blessing. I can’t believe it’s almost been one year since Hamas’ brutal attacks in Israel on October 7th and hostages, both alive and dead, are still being held. ADL will continue to do all it can to bring everyone home and ensure the safety of Jews wherever they may live.

With schools starting up again, we’re already seeing the toll of antisemitism. As the year began, Montgomery County Public Schools were subjected to antisemitic graffiti. At the collegiate level, we commend the University of Maryland administration’s recent reversal disallowing the University’s SJP chapter and others from demonstrating on October 7th. Similarly, George Washington University upheld the suspensions of SJP and JVP on campus for the Fall semester.

Outside of the educational sphere, I was honored to join Virginia Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares in Richmond for the signing of HB 18 and SB 7 , which moves to expand criminal penalties under the hate crime laws against bigotry by ensuring that ethnicity is recognized among the protected classes. Being a part of moments like this makes me proud of ADL’s involvement in advocacy work at the local, state, and federal level.

As we reflect on these accomplishments, there is a bittersweet feeling amongst us all. For many, every day since 10/7 has been plagued by a feeling of grief and heartache as we wait for the hostages to be released. Amongst these feelings, however, also exists the profound pride around the work we do. We won’t stop until our mission is fulfilled: to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.

As always, thank you for your support and I encourage you to read more about our ongoing efforts in the region as well as upcoming events.

Best,
Meredith R. Weisel
ADL Washington, D.C. Regional Director
