Dear Friend –
We’re at a pivotal moment, and we have a unique chance to shape our future.
Artificial Intelligence holds incredible promise, but without regulation it also carries real risk: untested AI models could bolster terrorists, present the threat of cyberattacks, or carry other catastrophic prospects. And while we don’t know exactly what AI’s full impact will be, one thing is clear: by the time we do, it may be too late to act.
California is leading the nation with a widely popular AI safety bill that recently passed the state legislature. Now California Governor Gavin Newsom has the chance to make history by signing SB 1047—the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act – into law. But Big Tech is fighting for a veto, which is why we need to show overwhelming popular support for this common-sense safety approach. [1]
As AI models grow more powerful, we risk repeating the mistakes of unchecked social media as a society. When the alarms sounded, we hesitated. If we could go back, we would have acted sooner to create safer social media platforms. This time, we can’t afford to wait.
Here’s what SB 1047 does:
- Requires safety testing for high-risk AI models.
- Protects whistleblowers who expose AI dangers.
- Invests in public infrastructure, expanding access to AI resources for academic researchers and startups.
It’s a common-sense, light-touch approach that demands safety testing for powerful AI models before they’re released. SB 1047 holds tech giants accountable, turning voluntary commitments into real protections. But Big Tech is pushing hard for a veto even though this bipartisan AI safety legislation overwhelmingly passed in the California State Legislature. We can’t let them off the hook—California must lead the nation on AI safety.
Gov. Newsom is a national figure with bold ambitions, and he cares about the opinion of Americans from around the country – including you.
Together, we can take on Big Tech – and win.
Thanks for being with us,
