Hello Democrats,
The General Election is only 52 days away and early voting begins even sooner! This week, we launched our Poll Watcher volunteer campaign for the upcoming election. Democrats of Indian River will be training and designating poll watchers to watch and observe the conduct of elections and could use your help. With many shifts at multiple precincts to cover, this effort requires many volunteers. Anyone wishing to volunteer as a poll watcher for the General Election should fill out THIS FORM ([link removed]) by Sunday, September 15. For more information, check out the Indian River Supervisor of Election Poll Watchers Guide HERE ([link removed](2024)_R.pdf) .

We are happy to share multiple ways for you to engage in the most effective tool we have to turn Florida blue, direct voter contact. Join us for canvassing and phone banking every week! You are also welcome to swing by our office to pick up a "grab and go" phone bank list.

Meet the Candidate

Vice President Kamala Harris has devoted her career to fighting for the people.

Vice President Kamala Harris has dedicated her career to fighting for justice and equality. Inspired by her parents’ involvement in civil rights, she has worked in various capacities—from county courtrooms and the California Attorney General’s office to the U.S. Senate and the White House. Now, she is running for President to continue advancing freedoms, justice, and opportunities for all Americans. During her vice presidency, she has supported President Biden in addressing extremism, defending reproductive rights, and combating high drug costs, including capping insulin prices at $35 for seniors. The Biden-Harris administration has achieved a historic record, including economic recovery, significant infrastructure investments, healthcare improvements, climate action, and historic Supreme Court appointments.

Harris’s career includes leading initiatives on wage increases, healthcare, and election security as a U.S. Senator, and securing significant settlements against big banks and predatory colleges as California’s Attorney General. She has also fought for marriage equality, prosecuted transnational gangs, and led groundbreaking programs to reduce recidivism. A proud graduate of Howard University and UC Hastings College of the Law, Harris has broken numerous barriers, becoming the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American Vice President. She is committed to protecting fundamental freedoms and continues to be guided by her mother’s legacy.

2024 Ballot Measures

Amendment 1 would make school board elections partisan beginning in 2026. Candidates would be nominated for the general election through partisan primaries and be featured on the ballot with partisan labels, such as Democrat and Republican.

Florida had partisan school board elections until voters approved Amendment 11 ([link removed](1998)) , which prohibited party labels in school board elections, in 1998. Amendment 11 was referred to the ballot by the Florida Constitution Revision Commission ([link removed]) .
Tina Certain, Alachua County School Board Chair: "It's important to me that the race stays nonpartisan because everyone is impacted by school decisions. It doesn't matter what your political affiliation is, and I think everyone should get to vote and have a voice on a candidate, not just based on your political registration during the time of the election. We're seeing more politicization in education because of the governor of Florida’s actions. That is not rising up from local communities. It's coming down from Tallahassee, from the governor, down."

Carmen Ward, president of the Alachua County Education Association: "I do not think there's any place for partisan politics in our public education system. We should be fully focused on what's best for students. I feel like public education is under attack, and part of the attack is sowing the seeds of division. I think this is part of the culture war strategy that is being perpetrated on classrooms, on educators and public school systems by our leadership."

STOP Project 2025

** Another Reason Project 2025 Is So Bad for Women? Guns.
------------------------------------------------------------

The "guns everywhere" agenda in Project 2025, a plan associated with Donald Trump's potential second term, contains radical proposals to increase gun presence and reduce oversight. Project 2025's proposals would significantly undermine public safety and increase gun violence. Read more HERE ([link removed]) .
