There are dozens of outrageous talking points to analyze from Tuesday
night’s debate,
John, but I want to start with
one thing in particular — and it doesn’t involve eating cats and dogs.

[ [link removed] ]Donald Trump and Kamala Harris on the debate stage

“Viktor Orbán, one of the most respected men, they call him a strongman,
prime minister of Hungary… they said why is the whole world blowing up?
Why is it blowing up? He said because ‘you need Trump as President. They
were afraid of him… China was afraid of him. North Korea was afraid of
him. Russia was afraid of him…’ Viktor Orbán said it. He said ‘the most
respected, most feared person is Donald Trump. We had no problems when
Trump was President.’”

Let’s clarify a few things,
John.

The “strongman” who Donald Trump is quoting on the debate stage? The
ultra-conservative prime minister of Hungary who has rolled back human
rights, eviscerated their democracy, limited the freedoms of the press,
and cozied up to Russia. Not exactly someone that a candidate for the
United States President should be showcasing as a character reference.

There’s a reason why Orbán, Vladimir Putin, and other autocratic leaders
around the world are rooting for Trump to take back the White House:
Donald Trump is the greatest threat to democracy — and I’m not just
talking about here in the United States.

As Vice President Kamala Harris said on the debate stage, “Those dictators
and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they’re so
clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors.”

Worldwide, democratic countries are terrified of the prospect of a second
Trump presidency.

And we should be.

During his time in the White House, Trump cozied up to Vladimir Putin and
the Kremlin. He exchanged love letters with the dictator of North Korea,
and he has a warmer relationship with Kim Jong-un than the Canadian Prime
Minister. He even threatened to abandon our NATO allies if there was an
attack in Europe.

Don’t forget, he extorted Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an
effort to get him to smear President Biden — by withholding military aid
for their war against Russia. That led to Trump’s first impeachment —
where I investigated him and served as lead impeachment manager in his
Senate trial.

While President Biden and Vice President Harris have worked to restore our
country’s standing with our allies, Trump would be like a bull in a china
shop on the global stage — much to the delight of autocratic leaders
worldwide.

I have stood up against authoritarianism and in support of democracy for
my entire career. From my chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee
to leading Trump’s impeachment, to serving on the January 6 Select
Committee, I have always put my oath of office and the Constitution first.

That’s what this campaign is about — protecting our democracy and building
an economy that works for everyone. Bringing truth to light and ensuring
autocratic leaders who claim they alone can fix our problems never serve
as president.

Alongside Vice President Harris, I promise to protect and defend our
democracy from threats both foreign and domestic — and that includes
Donald Trump.
