A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

It's great news that Active Travel England has again ranked Nottingham as a level 3 for our cycling and walking provision. We were one of only 6 local authorities out of 80 to achieve a 3.

It’s wonderful to get this recognition of our teams hard work in securing funding and working with partners and funders to develop safe new cycle routes around the city.

Being able to cycle easily to school, to work or around the city benefits everyone, taking cars off our roads, making our air cleaner and contributing to the city’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2028.

We look forward to working with partners to secure more funding and expand our network further in the future.

Nottingham ranked among the top local authorities for walking and cycling infrastructure

Nottingham City Council has been ranked [ [link removed] ]as one the highest performing local authorities in a Government review of active travel infrastructure and support.

Active Travel England – the government’s executive agency tasked with making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyday trips – has this week published its updated active travel capability ratings for local authorities.

Nottingham is one of just six local authorities to achieve a 3 rating, putting it among the top performing councils. All 80 local authorities outside London took part in the process.

According to Active Travel England’s ratings, Nottingham City Council demonstrates ‘Very strong local leadership, comprehensive plans, and a significant network in place with a growing number of people choosing to walk, wheel and cycle.’

Nottingham City Council has proved successful in attracting unprecedented levels of funding for cycling and walking, such as through the Active Travel Fund and the Transforming Cities fund [ [link removed] ], meaning that safe cycle routes can be added, making getting around the city easier and greener for everyone.

Nottingham City Council has expanded its cycling infrastructure significantly in recent years, with new various cycle projects being completed in summer / autumn 2024, including:

* City Centre Cycle Routes [ [link removed] ] - our cross-city network from east to west is now complete as far as Pennyfoot Street
* Beechdale Wigman [ [link removed] ]- a new safe segregated cycle lane along Wigman Road and Hollington Road in Bilborough which will be complete in the next few weeks
* St Ann's Well Road [ [link removed] ] - a new safe segregated cycle lane along St Ann's Well Road which will be complete in the next few weeks

Household Support Fund

Support still available through the Household Support Fund

Support remains available for struggling pensioners, families and the city’s most vulnerable households to apply for through the Household Support Fund (HSF), as Nottingham City Council continues to distribute September's allocation of supermarket and energy vouchers.

The Government has also announced that the HSF scheme, which had been due to finish at the end of the month, has been further extended until April 2025 which will enable the Council to continue to provide help with the cost of essentials through autumn and winter.

The latest award as part of this extension, expected to be approximately £3.5m, will take the amount of support distributed to vulnerable people in Nottingham through HSF to more than £22.5m since October 2021.

The full programme of support and go live dates, along with details of how residents can apply, can be found on the website here:
