One key aspect that’s missing from the New York Times story is that Happy and Patty can and should go to an elephant sanctuary and that the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, have refused to let them. The Bronx Zoo isn’t Happy and Patty’s home. It’s where they’ve been tormented for half a century. There’s no reason they can’t do as the Detroit Zoo once did and as other zoos have also done: acknowledge that no zoo exhibit can meet elephants’ needs and allow the elephants to live a more just and dignified life in a sanctuary.
And remember: this goes far beyond the failings of Bronx Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Society leadership. At the core of this suffering and lack of transparency, now and always, is elephants’ rightlessness. We deeply appreciate everything NhRP supporters have done, especially the last few weeks, to advocate for Happy and Patty. Your voices are being heard. Let’s keep getting louder.
Thank you for your support and we’ll keep you posted, The NhRP |
