New York City Mayor de Blasio blasted after criticizing Jewish community for funeral
WJC President Ronald S. Lauder calls New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to task for having “painted the Jewish community as lawbreakers and unconcerned about the city’s public health.” Lauder added: “To blame the entire Jewish community is the type of stereotyping that is dangerous and unacceptable at any time, and particularly pernicious while the world is gripped in fear and the worst among us are looking for scapegoats.”

Board of Deputies will never apologize for advocating for all Jews | WJC Vice President and Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl
“We believe it is important for us to have a strong relationship with the Government. This is a relationship we are proud to have. This means praise where it is due and constructive criticism where it is not. But we also believe it is vital to ensure that the key party of opposition addresses the anti-Jewish prejudice in its ranks which made many Jews consider leaving the country,” writes van der Zyl in the Jewish News.

Josef Schuster, President of Germany’s Jewish community, named to German Ethics Council
Following the appointments on 30 April, the German Ethics Council will thus be newly formed after numerous Council members, including the previous chairman, Peter Dabrock, left the committee 20 days prior. The German Ethics Council now has 24 members, including three members who were appointed outside the regular cycle between 2016 and 2018. The Council is expected to meet for its first plenary session in Berlin on 28 May.

Toronto synagogue’s online prayer service disrupted by Nazi sympathizers
The WJC-affiliated Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) condemned the incident and affirmed that it was in contact with other minority groups to discuss steps to combat the threat. CIJA also announced plans to meet with government officials about the issue.

Israel remembers its fallen soldiers and terror victims
At 8 PM, Israelis observed a one-minute moment of silence, as a siren rang out across the country in honor of Israel's fallen. The siren was followed by a small ceremony at the Western Wall, attended by President Reuven Rivlin and Chief of General Staff Aviv Kochavi. At 9 PM, following the completion of the ceremony, the names of the fallen were screened on the wall of the Knesset.
