Hi team,

Renna here -- I’m the Regional Organizer in Sierra Nevada for California Environmental Voters.

In northeastern California, just about 60 miles from Mount Shasta, the Pit River Tribe is pushing for a national monument to permanently protect the sacred lands known as Sáttítla in the Medicine Lake Highlands.

This is a moment for everyone, regardless of where they live, to rally around the Indigenous community and make it clear that sacred lands must be protected. The Pit River Tribe has our full support, team -- and we need President Biden to stand with them, too.

With the stroke of a pen, President Biden could use his powers under the Antiquities Act to create the new Sáttítla National Monument on over 205,000 acres in the Medicine Lake Highlands. Will you sign our petition urging Biden to act now?

Just a few weeks ago, Senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler along with Representative Adam Schiff called on President Biden to designate the Sáttítla National Monument. We’re grateful for these lawmakers’ commitment to continuing to amplify the voices of the Pit River Tribe.

And protecting Sáttítla isn’t just important for the community -- it’s essential for providing pure water downstream, supporting agriculture, and meeting the needs of millions of people. With the capacity to store as much water as California’s 200 largest surface reservoirs, this area is a vital safeguard against drought and the climate crisis.

The Pit River Tribe has fought tirelessly to defend its land and water from industrial development leases -- designating this area as a national monument will provide long-term protection and honor the Tribe’s connection to the land.

It will also ensure the survival of numerous species and maintain the ecological balance that is so vital for our well-being. Not only will this preserve biodiversity, but also foster greenspaces where families live, play, and access nature.

This land must be permanently protected for future generations of Indigenous people to continue their cultural practices and for all people to enjoy this incredible landscape. Sign our petition urging President Biden to establish the Sáttítla National Monument.
