Read Ellie Porte’s experience as a conservative woman on campus.

Dear John,

Last week, Glamour Magazine featured an interview with Ellie Porte, a NeW Alumna from American University, in an article exploring the current political climate on college campuses in anticipation of the 2024 presidential election.

The article, which featured college-aged women from an array of political backgrounds, shed light on some of the hostility and discrimination Ellie experienced as a conservative woman on her campus. She explained, “One of my friends belongs to a Black sorority on campus, and some of her sorority sisters were like, ‘I don’t know how you’re friends with her.’ People would say that I’m not Black enough, because I have white parents, too, and because of my beliefs.”

Despite these campus interactions and being “exposed” to alternative viewpoints, Ellie’s experiences only strengthened her political convictions as a conservative: “I’m never going to compromise my values because other people don’t agree with it,” she noted.

Unfortunately, Ellie’s encounters as a conservative woman on campus are not an anomaly. Throughout the past two decades of NeW, we have worked to cultivate a vibrant community to counteract campus hostility and empower women like Ellie to advocate for conservative values on campuses nationwide. Thank you for your impact and support as a valued member of our NeW community as we continue to equip the next generation of female leaders.

All the best,
