These Special Areas support subsistence hunting traditions crucial to Alaska Natives in an area that is home to polar bears, wolves, moose, one of the largest caribou herds in the world, and nesting birds from around the world. Expanding and creating new Special Areas could be an important part of President Biden's conservation legacy.

Here’s the problem: Big Oil CEOs and their political allies will jump at any opportunity to derail new protections — even when the price is the destruction of sensitive ecosystems and cultural resources for Native communities.
