This month, in recognition of [Construction Suicide Prevention Week]([link removed]) (September 9–13) and [National Construction Appreciation Week]([link removed].) (third week of September), AFSP is highlighting the essential contributions made by hardworking members of the construction industry –– as well as the unique considerations surrounding suicide prevention in this community.

Construction worker suicides are nearly five times higher than fatalities from job site safety incidents, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fortunately, suicide can often be prevented, which is why AFSP has partnered with [Bechtel]([link removed]) –– a leading global construction, engineering, and project management company –– to make a difference and save lives. In the next few weeks, AFSP will also be joining forces with North America's Building Trades Union (NABTU) for two important events related to suicide prevention in the construction industry.

- September 19 –– North America’s Building Trades Union (NABTU) Day of Action With Jim Brewer and AFSP

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month and National Construction Appreciation Week, AFSP and the North America’s Building Trades Union (NABTU) are partnering on September 19 in support of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. AFSP and NABTU will engage advocates in support of the Local 98 Response Act, one of AFSP’s 2024 Advocacy Forum priorities, to connect people contacting 988 to services in their own state as quickly and safely as possible, while also protecting their privacy.

- September 28 –– AFSP Plenary at the Tradeswomen Build Nations Conference

Tradeswomen Build Nations (TWBN) is the largest building trades conference globally, attended by over 4,000 building trades leaders and professionals from across North America. Their goal this year is to uplift women in the industry, promote women's recruitment and retention, increase health and safety education and awareness, and expand tradeswomen engagement — on the job and in our unions. AFSP Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine Moutier will be a plenary speaker at the event.

In case you missed it, you can also watch the video recording of a recent webinar on suicide prevention in the construction industry, featuring AFSP Senior Vice President of Programs Trisha M. Calabrese, along with others from the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP), the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), and the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA):

Watch the video recording of last week's Webinar on Suicide Prevention in the Construction Industry. AFSP Senior Vice President of Programs Trisha M. Calabrese, MPH, participated in a panel on how employers can cultivate a culture of care in the workplace. The conversation was moderated by Sonya Bohmann, Executive Director, CIASP; and featured Amber Trueblood, DrPH, Data Center Director, CPWR; Jessica Bunting, MPH, Research to Practice Director, CPWR; and Jamie Becker, LCSW-C, Director of Health Promotion, LHSFNA.

The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates among all professions in the U.S. –– but there is hope.

Over the next five years, Bechtel's $7 million dollar commitment to AFSP will provide critical resources and programming to 500,000 U.S. construction workers. By leveraging the combined knowledge of construction industry leaders like Bechtel and NABTU, in combination with AFSP's expertise in suicide research, education, and prevention, we can help save lives.
