Protect our coastlines & communities

Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

We’re all connected by a watershed ([link removed]) . What ends up in the ocean starts on land, from our communities, through rivers and streams, and out to sea. September marks Coastal Cleanup Month worldwide, but you can have an impact wherever you live. Whether it’s participating in community science through our TrashBlitz research platform ([link removed]) or taking action on federal legislation ([link removed]) , read on to learn how you can make a difference for coastlines AND communities this month.

Protect Waterways with Data

The U.S. National Park System encompasses some of the most diverse and unique landscapes, from the icy waters of Kenai Fjords to the waterfalls of Yosemite to the coral reefs of Dry Tortugas. Wherever you live, there’s a national park or federal land nearby that needs your help! By collecting data on plastic pollution through our Plastic-Free Parks ([link removed]) project, you’re supporting science-based solutions that protect our parks.

Protect Waterways with Legislation

We’re working to advance policies that reduce two major sources of microplastic pollution affecting our nation’s waterways. Plastic pellets ([link removed]) (AKA nurdles) often spill during production and transport, while microfibers ([link removed]) shed from our clothes during laundering. These microplastics pose serious risks to both the environment and public health, but YOU can help drive solutions!

📢 TAKE ACTION:

Urge Congress to hold plastic pellet polluters accountable ([link removed])

Ask your Member of Congress to co-sponsor the Fighting Fibers Act of 2024 ([link removed])
